Case Study: Large Remote Healthcare Monitoring Client

Learn how we helped our innovative healthcare client develop a legacy displacement product roadmap that sequenced and balanced strategic business and customer outcomes.

Product Roadmap case study

Business Problem

Our client received funding to pursue a large-scale legacy platform rebuild to service their entire customer-base serving cardiologists, medical staff, and their patients. The company had in place existing in-house and offshore development resources, product management, and product design staff.

Teams were currently executing on a four-year, feature-based product roadmap outlining the many steps the company planned to take to achieve the platform scalability that followed, which allowed them to receive their funding.

In executing on this plan, the company quickly found itself stuck in a "legacy rebuild treadmill" where daily customer demands pulled developers and product management resources away from planned platform efforts, causing costs to spiral, creating conflicting goals, and producing no new value to the business while moving the legacy rebuild goalpost further away every day.

By the time they had contacted Better Diligence, it had been six months since their last production deploy. They were stuck and had no idea how to move forward in any direction.

Solution

Better Diligence deployed a team that consisted of a Head of Product, Product Manager, Product Designer, and Head of Engineering to embed with the company's leadership and development teams in pursuit of these efforts.

The team conducted a roadmap review, stakeholder interviews, product data analysis, customer interviews, maturity assessment, DevOps reporting dashboards, customer journey mapping, and competitive research to produce the company's first outcome-based Rapid Roadmapwhich included three quarter-based time horizons, target customer outcomes, prioritization framework, and executive leadership reporting dashboard.

Opportunity

Our client engaged us to develop a strategic platform product roadmap based on key customer outcomes to assist with the legacy migration efforts. In support of this, they also engaged with us to embed Product Management support in helping teams to execute on the roadmap with improved agility and visibility by leadership.

Results

Initially, the client asked to engage with Better Diligence on a short-term one-month trial basis before committing to a longer-term engagement. During the trial period, Better Diligence worked closely with the company's CEO, CTO, and Head of Product to develop their first outcome-based Rapid Roadmap with a customized prioritization framework for evaluating current, upcoming, and future product expansion and optimization opportunities against strategic business goals.

Once visualized, the executive management team was able to see the majority of engineering resources were allocated to misaligned projects with unclear value to the business. With the Rapid Roadmap in place, the leadership team was able to eliminate low impact projects, reduce costs, and focus efforts on only the best opportunities for the business.

Within 4 weeks of engaging with Better Diligence, the client streamlined their technology organization in support of product-led growth efforts resulting in accelerated delivery of value to their customers with half the usual time and cost of development. The CEO now cites the Rapid Roadmap as their "method for making better product decisions."
